Song-to-Song Notes, by Rüdiger Ladwig
1. Different Strokes
Der Syl Johnson Soul/Funk-Klassiker von 1968, der später auch von Boogie Down
Productions
Album-Opener. The classic syl johnson soulfunjk-cut, originally recorded in 1986, later also recorded by Boogie Down Productions among others. A song bobby and me
both really love, so we put him on no. 1 on the album, a good opener, anyway.
2. Cold Cold Night
Compilation "A Collection Of Various Interpretations Of SUNNY, Part 2", ich
that unreleased soulrock-mover, written by bobby hebb together with phil medley, was
the reason recording this album. i got a gooseskin when i heard the acoustic version first during a live-radioshow in berlin in 2002 when bobby was promoting "sunny 2", then the idea was born.
3. A Satisfied Mind
originally also on bobby´s first full-length album "sunny", was the second single
release in 1966.
Woman" und "You Made A New Man Out Of Me", die Entscheidung viel uns schwer
Nashville, bobby´s hometown and musical roots. johnny adams had a huge hit with "release me", but we had two other johnny adams´s tracks in mind to record: "You Made A New Man Out Of Me" and "Proud Woman". It became the second mentioned and later in teh studio Bobby´s version became the most favorite song
to most of the musicians.
5. Sunny
mehrerehundertfach und Genreübergreifend interpretiert wurde, dokumentiert auf den beiden so genannten One Song Compilations, "A Collection Of Various Interpretations Of SUNNY" (2000) und ""A Collection Of Various Interpretations Of SUNNY, Part 2"
(2002), erschienen bei Roof Music in Kooperation mit Trocadero Records
(www.sunny-the-song.de).
zweisprachig aufzunehmen. so far, bobby never recorded sunny in a duet, so we thought it is time...
6. When Love Goes Wrong
Also
Bobby wrote "a natural man" for lou in 1970, we listened to some of his songs and ended up recording "when love goes wrong", a real soul-dancefloor mover with great lyrics.
7. We´re Gonna Make It
Ain`t Groceries". first 45 single for little milton for chicago´s checker/chess label, after he´s recorded for sun, meteor and bobbin, not his most known songs, but a real classic with a lovely story told.
8. Cold Cold Heart
es passiert eben was passieren muß.
Opry in Nashville xxxx kennenlernte.
we never planned recording a country song for the album, at least not THE PROBABLY
MOST COUNTRY CLASSIC by hank himself. while working on an hank williams audiobook
i´ve interviewed bobby about his time in the smoky mountain boys, early nashville, the garnd ole opry and his relationsship to hank williams. Bobby was suddenly 50 years back and recalled a lot of things he had forgotten. hank
once told bobby:
"bobby, when you wanna know, what a `cold cold heart` is, just record the song
yourself...". hebb never did that, so we HAD TO PUT THAT SONG ON THE ALBUM, and, by the way, it came out great, probably the most atmospheric version along to Norah Jones`.
9. Bound By Love
eingespielt.
you know more about that song, joe, bobby wanted that and really loves the result.
10. Willow Tree
Erst begeistert davon,
ihm reichlich Material anzubieten (was war dabei?), viel mir dann gar nicht
so viel passendes ein. Aber dann kam mir das Album "Yeah, It´s That Easy !"
ebenfalls xxxxxx
bobby asked me about some good songs by "any youngsters". i love g. love´s albums
and so we picked "willow tree" who had worked with dr. john as the keyboardist
on his album/own version. we wanted to have a male choir singing the chorus,
but it
came out better without...
bobby´s version is faster then th love-original.
11. Don´t Tear Me Down
a charlie rich title, that was a hidden gem for a long time. originally recorded in
1996
during his soul/roots-period (on hi-records), this song never was reelased until 1998,
when it finally came out on the hi record (UK) album "i´ll shed no tears - the best
of the
hi recordings"; unbelievable, that song didn´t make it on an album in ´66, when bobby
had "sunny"..., easy answer: the unissued songs of that specific session by
charlie rich
where on a tape at a hi records storage room, simply forgotten.
12. That´s What I Want To Know
James carr, one of the coolest deep soul artists, died in january 2001. during the
mid to end sixties he had a series of hits for the memphis based
Goldwax-label. we picked one of the fastest songs he ever did, "that´s what
i want to know", 170 bpm or so. we wanted to do the song in the same tempo but it
didn´t worked out for some reasons. we were close, giving up that song at all in
that session, but suddenly bobby started singing and giving the new groove to the musicians. he said: "we have to do it otis´ - style", the band jumped into studio and bobby recorded the now smooth-groovin´ emotionizer at first take. he wanted to do it better when the instruments were recorded, but we stayed with the first
take, or better, pre-first take. after a while bobby phoneed me and said, that "that´s what i wnat to know" became his mots favorite song of the album.
